01 · Logos

7 types of logo

Every logo in the world is one of these seven. The examples use a made-up salon called Example.

exampleYOUR TAGLINE1 of 7

Wordmark

Your business name, written in its own special lettering. No icon.

Short, easy names that people should remember word for word.

Long names. They get tiny on an Instagram profile picture.

Google, Coca-Cola, FedEx

EXEXAMPLEYOUR TAGLINE2 of 7

Lettermark

Your initials designed as one shape, also called a monogram.

Long names, luxury and beauty. The Mirabell Aesthetics MB monogram is one I designed.

Brand new businesses nobody knows yet. Show the full name next to it at first.

Louis Vuitton, Chanel, HBO

3 of 7

Symbol

A simple picture of a real thing that stands for your business.

When one image says what you are about, like a moon for a night-time calm feeling.

Being too literal. A pair of scissors for a hair salon looks like every other salon.

Apple, Shell, Target

4 of 7

Abstract mark

A shape that means nothing at first and slowly becomes yours.

Businesses with big plans or many services, where one picture would be too narrow.

It takes time (and posts, signs, ads) before people link the shape to you.

Nike, Pepsi, Adidas

5 of 7

Mascot

A friendly character that becomes the face of the brand.

Family places, kids, food and fun brands that want to feel warm and talkative.

It is hard to look premium or serious with a cartoon.

KFC, Michelin, Duolingo

Combination mark

A symbol and your name together. Later each one can also be used on its own.

Most small businesses. It is the one I recommend most, because it works everywhere.

Keep both parts simple, or it starts to feel crowded.

Burger King, Lacoste, Doritos

EXEXAMPLE · YOUR TAGLINE7 of 7

Emblem

Your name inside a badge, seal or crest, like a wax seal on a gift box.

Barbers, cafés, academies and anything with a classic, traditional feel.

Small details get lost when tiny. You also need a simple version for Instagram.

Starbucks, Harley-Davidson, BMW

02 · Fonts

6 font styles and the feeling they give

The same name feels completely different in each one. Try yours:

Example

Serif

Classic · Trusted · Luxury

Aesthetic clinics, luxury salons, jewellery. Small "feet" on the letters feel established.

Example

Sans serif

Modern · Clean · Friendly

Massage, wellness, booking websites. The easiest to read on a phone.

Example

Slab serif

Strong · Reliable · Solid

Barbers, garages, coffee. Thick square "feet" feel sturdy.

Example

Script

Elegant · Personal · Soft

Lashes, nails, brows, bridal makeup. Only for a name or a few words, never long text.

Example

Display

Loud · Bold · Confident

Barbers, gyms, events. Headlines only, it shouts.

Example

Monospace

Techy · Precise · Different

Tech, gaming, creative agencies. Every letter takes the same width.

These are guides, not rules. A script font can suit a garage and a bold font can suit a spa, when it is done well. Pick the feeling you want people to get.

Two fonts that work together

One font for headings, one for normal text, sometimes a third for quotes. Never more. Here is exactly what goes where, with the sizes and the spaces between them.

Elegant

  1. 1Headings Playfair Display · 32 px
  2. 2Text Outfit · 16 px · line height 1.5
  3. 3Quotes Playfair Display Italic · 20 px

Best for: Aesthetic clinics, luxury salons

Bold

  1. 1Headings Bebas Neue · 38 px
  2. 2Text Outfit · 16 px · line height 1.5
  3. 3Quotes Bebas Neue · 24 px

Best for: Barbers, gyms, garages

Personal

  1. 1Headings Great Vibes · 42 px
  2. 2Text Outfit · 16 px · line height 1.5
  3. 3Quotes Playfair Display Italic · 20 px

Best for: Lashes, nails, brows

Easy rule: headings about twice the size of the text, a gap close to the text size between them, and line height 1.5 so long text is easy to read.

FAQ

Branding questions

Which type of logo is best for a small business?

For most small businesses a combination mark: a simple symbol plus your name. You can use them together on your sign and website, and the symbol alone as your Instagram picture.

How many fonts should a brand use?

Two is ideal: one for headings and one for normal text. Three at the most. More than that starts to look messy, especially on menus and price lists.

What is a brand guide?

A short document that shows how to use your logo, colours and fonts, so your menu, sign, Instagram and website always look like the same business. My Elevate package includes a 6-page guide, Dominate a 12-page one.

Now make it yours.

You've seen the styles. I'll design the one that fits your business, ready to use everywhere.
